Ryan Rabideau will be the first to tell you his “happy place is a spreadsheet.” As Chief Strategy Officer at Rent Responsibly, he spends much of his time deep in financial planning and systems design, work that might seem behind-the-scenes and buttoned-up. But talk to him for a minute, and it becomes clear that the spreadsheets are just a starting point. His real work is building tools that empower hosts and managers, strengthen communities, and enrich guest experiences.
“The most exciting part [of my job] is how we are rolling out new initiatives that support our industry, and all [align with] our long-term vision of STRs for good,” Ryan said. “Our industry being healthy and being a good steward for the communities in which they operate means we can continue to create special memories for our guests.”
On any given day, he might be refining a workflow to help things run smoother, guiding Rent Responsibly’s financial analysis, or exploring how artificial intelligence can lighten the load for busy hosts. At the RR Summit in May 2025, he led a session on AI’s role in short-term rental operations, from enhancing guest messaging to automating daily administrative tasks, and he’s now leveraging those same tools inside the company to help streamline projects and internal communications.

“I love Ryan’s willingness to show up, to listen to other operators, and share his insights and best practices, all while getting his day job done with excellence,” said Rent Responsibly Co-Founder and CEO Dave Krauss. “[This] makes him just the type of unicorn teammate we dream of.”
Originally from the world of finance, Ryan entered the industry by accident, the way many vacation rental stories begin. He answered a Craigslist ad. The job was at a vacation rental company above a gym, and before long, he was hooked.
“Not to get too woo-woo,” he said, “but I believe the purpose of life is to enjoy the passage of time.”
Since then, his work has been about creating those experiences for others, whether through camper van rentals or helping property managers streamline their business.
“I find it inspiring,” he said. “The people in our industry didn’t wait for a college degree in short-term rentals. They figure it out and get it done to create and deliver hospitality.”
He has provided strategy consulting to multiple travel companies and is the founder of Wander PNW, Hungry Robots, and Cascadia Getaways.
Before joining Rent Responsibly full-time in March 2025, Ryan had already been quietly collaborating with the team for years. He and Dave were introduced by Wheelhouse CEO Andrew Kitchell, and their shared values around people, purpose, and impact made them a natural match.
“From Day One, Ryan was a tenacious solution finder with a bias for action,” Dave said. “These are unteachable traits, but invaluable in the startup environment. Ryan has enhanced our capacity by bringing in a fresh perspective both on how we can tell the story of the value of STRs create within communities, but also from the perspective of a hands-on operator through his growing management company, Cascadia Getaways.”

One of Ryan’s first major contributions has been helping launch the Right to Rent Collaborative, a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening state-level advocacy across the country. Rolled out during the 2025 RR Summit, R2RC aims to support a network of state associations through grant funding for operations, research, and advocacy. Rent Responsibly provides administrative support for the organization. Ryan was instrumental in building the infrastructure behind it, particularly the tech stack that enables property managers to automatically collect and donate $2 per reservation via their property management software.
Still, his favorite memories at Rent Responsibly have little to do with the balance sheet. They’re about belly laughs with teammates, late-night brainstorms, and a culture that blends meaningful work with room to play.
“My favorite memory of working with Ryan was when he and I stayed up late into the night on the couch at our vacation rental on a work trip, asking ChatGPT Deep Research to build me a ‘guidebook to being a startup CEO,’” Dave recalled. “When I woke up in the morning, Ryan’s 70-plus-page playbook for success was in my inbox. What started off as playing with AI tools turned into something tangible and valuable.”
When Ryan went on a week-long backpacking trip with his nephews and their friends to The Needles in Moab, Utah, shortly after joining the team, his colleagues encouraged it.
“I also believe traveling is a wellness activity, which Rent Responsibly actively supports through conferences and their ticket-to-anywhere perk, which I am excited to use,” he said.
At home in the Pacific Northwest, Ryan gardens, cooks for friends, and shares life with his partner Toni, their two dogs Nacho and Macaroon, and an ever-growing cat family that began with one alley cat and now includes eight.
“We put a cat door in the garage, so that is theirs now,” he said. “We have four alley cats and four kittens inside, and no mice thanks to them.”
He and Toni met through the vacation rental industry and married in Italy in 2023. Their friends turned the couple’s wedding into a roving multi-week celebration, popping up across towns and even on their honeymoon.
“It’s those times that create time dilation, when you are with family and friends, and time slows down,” Ryan reflected. “It could be through new shared experiences or just [being] so enthralled in conversation.”
That spirit of spontaneity and connection also drives much of what Ryan does in his work.
Whether designing more intelligent systems or geeking out on a spreadsheet, Ryan approaches his work with intention and a belief in long-term impact.
“I am excited to be playing a part in making lasting positive impacts on our industry,” he said.
